Monthly Safety Bulletin Providing information to Promote safe Schools and organizations

1. Violence Among Girls On The Increase

Last month we reported that school violence is on the rise. It appears that violence among girls are on the risk as well. At a birthday party in Baltimore, Nicole kissed a boy on the cheek as a dare. At least 6 other girls and possibly 2 adult women then attacked the 12 year-old and put her in the hospital in a coma. Statistics are showing a marked rise in the number of serious violent incidents involving girls. Research indicates that girls fight different from boys; they are more focused on hurting and demeaning their opponent than are the boys. Girls tend to harbor grudges and a desire to "get even" much longer than boys do. Fights and angry outbursts can destroy the learning environment in a school.   To read the full article click here.

Lock Out Violence Everyday with Keys To Safer Schools.com

A school bus is hijacked. One student stabs and kills another on the bus. Shots are fired from the roadside into a bus with homeward bound students. The bus swerves to avoid an animal and a student dies as a result. These are not fantasy, they are not scenes from a Hollywood horror movie, they are actual incidents from this school year. What would happen in your school district if one of these scenarios were to happen in your home town?  Do your buses have 2-way communication with a dispatcher in case of emergency?  Do you leave keys in your buses when unsecured?  Are your bus drivers training to handle these types of situation?  Other incidents - 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

The Keys staff have years of experience in contingency planning to include bus emergency response training and planning. Don't be caught off guard--call Keys today learn how your school can be better prepared for any contingency.

6. Tips for Students: Shoplifting among Teens

 Why do people Shoplift?

  1. Some people have a Real Need Economic-people without money for food or clothingPhysical-Addicts with a need for drugs that drives them to steal.

  2. Some people have a Psychological Need: People may steal for reasons they don't under-stand. Shoplifting can be a sign of emotional problems.

  3. But most shoplifters Don't Need what they steal and could afford to buy it. They say; I do it for KicksEveryone does itThe store won't miss itI'm bored.

Don't most Shoplifters get off?  NO!

  1. Many stores have guards, plainclothes detectives, electronic tags and more.

  2. Stores are prosecuting more frequently.

    • Laws are getting tougher.

    • Even first time offenders are going to court and being put on probation.

    • Later Convictions - in getting jail time and larger fines.

What can be done?  It's going to take us all to stop this...

  1. If you see it, REPORT IT.

  2. Work with concerned groups.

  3. Encourage Honesty among your friends and classmates.

10. Tip of the Month for Teachers:  Fables and Facts about suicide

Fable: People who talk about suicide don't commit suicide. Fact: Most people who kill themselves have given definite warnings of their suicidal intentions.
Fable: Suicide happens without warning. Fact: Suicidal persons typically give many clues regarding their suicidal intentions.
Fable: Suicidal people are fully intent on dying. Fact: Most suicidal people are undecided about living or dying--that's what makes prevention possible.
Fable: Once people are suicidal, they are suicidal forever. Fact: Individuals who wish to kill themselves are suicidal only for a limited period of time.
Fable: Suicide strikes much more often among the rich--or, conversely, almost exclusively among the poor Fact: Suicide is very "democratic" and is represented proportionately among all levels of society.
