FREISING, Germany, Feb. 19, 2002: Four
people are dead after a former student entered his old
high school in this town near Munich, Germany and opened fire. He also
detonated at least 2 home made pipe bombs. Special Police units wearing
protective equipment and black masks surrounded the school and used armored
vehicles to assist in evacuating the students and faculty. When Police
entered the building they found the assailant dead of a gunshot wound, an
apparent suicide. They also discovered that several staff members had been
wounded. The Principal later died of his wounds. Two teachers were shot in
the face but are expected to recover.
"We heard two explosions and then there was a fire
alarm. We went out, but we though it was a false alarm," said Mike, an
11th-grader who gave only his first name. "We found out only gradually
what had happened."
The school specializes in business courses and has about
400 students who range in age from 12 to 18. It was soon learned that the
gunman had started his rampage several hours earlier at a factory in the
neighboring city of Eching. He entered a factory where he had recently been
fired and shot his former boss and a foreman, ages 38 and 40, with a
"heavy-caliber gun," police spokesman Hans-Peter Kammerer said.
One man died on the spot, the other shortly afterward.
