Re:  Compliance with Act 648

Message:  We have continued to have several requests from area schools to provide staff development that would meet compliance requirements of ACT 648 of 2003.  As you probably know Act 648 of 2003 and as referenced in Director’s Memo SI-03-066 requires school districts to have a Plan on or before January 1, 2004. This Plan is to provide for the safety of students and employees in the event of a terrorist attack. The Act requires schools to specifically include;

  * Contingency plans for attacks using biological agents,
   the use of nerve gas, or similar chemical agents, affecting
   the school and in the event of war affecting the school.

 * The plan should provide for students and staff to
   participate in exercises to the extent practical.

To help all our schools meet these requirements; we have agreed to host a two-day training workshop conducted by experts in this field. The trainers will provide information about the tools and methods of terrorist and practical actions that schools can take to protect their students and staffs. By the end of the second day, each participating school will have completed a terrorism plan that can be sent to the SDE and attached to your school’s Crisis Response Plan which will put you in compliance with all requirements.

This is a two day workshop and since the plan is due Jan 1, 2004 we have scheduled the training for December 10-11, 2003.  Each day will start at 8:30 AM and end at 3:30 PM.  A flyer is attached with more specific information about the training

Each superintendent should carefully select their representative or representatives to attend this training because these representative(s) will in fact be writing a plan of action for your school.  You may send whoever best fits your need and you may send multiple representatives if you choose.
