A Student killed and one injured in park across from the School - School goes into lockdown.

09/04/03 Denver, CO, One adolescent has been killed and another wounded in a city park across the street from Adams City High School in Commerce City today at noon. Police continue to investigate to determine if more people may be involved in the incident. Apparently, the teens were fighting at the park before the shooting broke out. All 11 schools in the Adams County School District went to a Level 2 Lockdown about an hour after the shooting [see Crisis Planning]. This procedure allows students to be picked up by their parents if they have proper identification. District officials pointed out that while the park is within their district it is not school property.

On August 11, 2003 a former Ranum High School (Denver, CO) student was sentenced to two years in the Colorado Division of Youth Services for a shooting incident at the Adams County school. Manuel Aragon, 15 [Assessment Training for Early Warning Signs] , was arrested Feb. 5 after gunshots rang out at the school. Sheriff's investigators said Aragon fired at least five shots after a dispute with a classmate. Aragon, who was a freshman at the time of the incident, pleaded guilty five weeks ago to felony menacing and juvenile possession of a handgun.

Keys To Safer Schools.com sends condolences to the families and fellow students connected with such tragedies. We also strongly encourage schools everywhere to take this opportunity to review policy and practice that could prevent or mitigate such an event. Remember this school is not isolated. Anything that has happened at any school can happen at yours—and probably will if proactive measures are not taken to prevent it. If in doubt about your school’s policies or state of readiness, contact Keys today.

(See "Checklist of a Safe School")
