Campaign
Lock
Out Violence Everyday© is a campaign in its
second year. It is a campaign to raise
the awareness of the violence taking place in our schools, homes and
communities. Its focus is to bring the attention of the entire community toward
violence issues and solutions in our schools, homes and community. During Valentine’s
Day week of 2002, organizations and individuals from Hot Springs and
Garland County will sponsor events designed to promote unity. These events will
be entertaining, yet sobering as we look at this menace known as violence. Watch
for announcements over US 97 or KZNG 1340AM radio stations, the Sentinel-Record,
television, and on www.KeysToSaferSchools.com.

Day
One
CERTIFICATION
TRAINING: ASSESSMENT OF EARLY
WARNING SIGNS IN
AT-RISK STUDENTS
This
is the most essential
training available to schools and youth workers today. With the ever
increasing frequency of school shootings, it is time that we do something
about it. Building upon National Level research by the Department of
Education, Office of Juvenile Justice, the FBI, the Secret
Service and others, Keys' has developed a most unique approach to
the detection and prevention of School Violence. It looks at "Why"
we miss these students, "What" to do to identify them, and
"How" to provide help for them. There is an emphasis on
identification and assessment
of early
and imminent warning signs in troubled youth. This training
provides schools a component of the Risk
Assessment Team Model that meets the guidelines of the Commission
Report on Columbine for effectively identifying students who
may need help. Unlike training seminars that merely provide theory and
information, this training will produce Certification for using the Keys
To Safe Schools.com Assessment
Tool, a unique device that identifies students in need of help. But schools
should not stop with training Assessment Teams but should take the next step and
provide an in-service for ALL staff in identification
of Early Warning Signs.
Day
Two
ANGER
MANAGEMENT & DE-ESCALATION TRAINING
This
training is based on National Research and a must training for those that
work with children, adolescents and young adults. It is a "practical"
training that teaches how to recognize anger, manage anger and de-escalate
volatile situations in the classroom. It teaches the attendees to first
control themselves, then control the situation, and finally to control the
student. This training introduces Huan Ju, The Art of Redirection.
It provides physical and non-physical means to stop or break up a fight with
minimal risk to all involved. The techniques taught protect the dignity of
the combatants, which minimizes the probability of retaliation or
recurrence. The unique character of this system is that it is NOT pain
inducing, it maintains dignity and it is geared toward students in school
rather than adults in residential settings.
