Anger Management & Reducing School Violence

Training Seminar

Sponsored by: Public Agency Training Council

Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board Certified Provider 35-1639066

LOCATION: Holiday Inn (I-70 E. & Shadeland Ave, Ex. 89) Indianapolis, IN

Day One

CERTIFICATION TRAINING: ASSESSMENT OF EARLY WARNING SIGNS IN AT-RISK STUDENTS

This is the most essential training available to schools and youth workers today. With the ever increasing frequency of school shootings, it is time that we do something about it. Building upon National Level research by the Department of Education, Office of Juvenile Justice, the FBI, the Secret Service and others, Keys' has developed a most unique approach to the detection and prevention of School Violence. It looks at "Why" we miss these students, "What" to do to identify them, and "How" to provide help for them.  There is an emphasis on identification and assessment of early and imminent warning signs in troubled youth. This training provides schools a component of the Risk Assessment Team Model that meets the guidelines of the Commission Report on Columbine for effectively identifying students who may need help. Unlike training seminars that merely provide theory and information, this training will produce Certification for using the Keys To Safe Schools.com Assessment Tool, a unique device that identifies students in need of help. But schools should not stop with training Assessment Teams but should take the next step and provide an in-service for ALL staff in identification of Early Warning Signs.

Day Two

 ANGER MANAGEMENT & DE-ESCALATION  TRAINING

This training is based on National Research and a must training for those that work with children, adolescents and young adults. It is a "practical" training that teaches how to recognize anger, manage anger and de-escalate volatile situations in the classroom. It teaches the attendees to first control themselves, then control the situation, and finally to control the student. This training introduces Huan Ju, The Art of Redirection. It provides physical and non-physical means to stop or break up a fight with minimal risk to all involved. The techniques taught protect the dignity of the combatants, which minimizes the probability of retaliation or recurrence.  The unique character of this system is that it is NOT pain inducing, it maintains dignity and it is geared toward students in school rather than adults in residential settings.

Conference cost for two days $225.00

Bullying - BULLYING STOPS when RESPECT BEGINS (c)

Surely, bullying is not a problem for the students at the School for the Deaf!!
Most hearing people do not understand that the very same problems that they deal with, are present in the lives of deaf and severely hard of hearing students. In the case of bullying, the problem is often more intense. Many deaf students feel that they "deserve" to be bullied because of their difficulty in fitting in the hearing world. The program presented by Keys To Safer Schools.com will demonstrate that such common attitudes can mark them as targets. It will give them strategies for dealing with a bully individually, as part of a group and by taking it to the proper authority. We are truly excited for the opportunity to present this training to this very unique and special audience. Keys will address two the four modules within bullying in this assembly, they are:

    1. The Victim: How to handle being bullied by a peer.

    2. The Bully: How to identify the need for bullying and better ways to meet that need.

CRISIS ACTION TRAINING & WORKSHOP
Do you have a crisis plan or have you exercised your crisis plan lately?
This training is a two-day training that draws on a wealth of national research and years of professional experience in taking a "Template" for schools then developing it into a Crisis Response/Action Plan tailored to their specific needs and situation. KEYS Template and the completed Crisis Plans produced have been reviewed by state officials and meet the requirements established by regulation. The most effective way in using this Template is as part of a Crisis Action Training and Workshop that involves the staff at Keys facilitating a meeting of community stakeholders. The Template is used by the Keys staff to guide the community leaders, and the schools Crisis Team, through the steps of developing and publishing a fully functional Plan.

Guest Presenters -

Dr. W. Dodson was the Superintendent of Schools in Pearl, Mississippi on October 1, 1997 when one of his students decided that he was no longer going to be bullied and teased but instead was going to go on a shooting rampage. Dr. Dodson has testified before the United States Senate about Violence in Public Schools, he has been interviewed many times by radio and television talk show programs. He has also appeared before a number of professional conventions across America. Dr. Dodson speaks with the voice of experience about the Potentially Dangerous Student.   Learn about other presenters

Sabrina Steger, Mother of Kayce Steger, a school shooting victim, and a National Speaker on School Violence Prevention.

Kayce Steger was one of three girls killed in a school shooting in Paducah, Kentucky in December of 1997.  Since that time, Mrs.  Steger, has worked with a variety of groups to prevent other parents from going through the pain of losing a child to school violence.  She has also appeared before a Senate Hearing on School Violence and numerous television programs.

Focus - The focus is the Potentially Dangerous Student and methods that will expose the PDS before anyone gets hurt. Once discovered THEN WHAT?

Part of this conference will involve hearing from other school and law enforcement professionals on what has worked in their area to interdict violence and obtain help for PDS.

You will learn about a Nationally Used Assessment Tool that will help determine the PDS from just a Prankster and much more. Other topics will be "Managing Anger in the PDS" and "Bullying and the PDS".

If you work with students, as an educator, School Resource Officer, parent or other capacity, make plans now to join us in Orlando, July 29-30 to learn from others in the field how your organization can be more secure from random and planed acts of violence.  Click to learn more

Bullying - BULLYING STOPS when RESPECT BEGINS (c)

School students have reported an increase in bullying with severe consequences to themselves and their schools. As if this were not enough, bullying has been identified in a national study as a factor in the recent school shootings. At Columbine  a group of school athletes bullied the two boys who later became shooters. Almost any group in anyone's school could be the "bullies" and and it would be accurate at some point in time. Bullying can be physical, emotional or social. Keys' Bullying Program offers four modules to fully address the different aspects of this complex issue.  These are:

    1. The Victim: How to handle being bullied by a peer.
    2. The Bully: How to identify the need for bullying and better ways to meet that need.
    3. The School: How to deal with both sides of bullying in a productive manner.
    4. The Parent: How to recognize signs that your child is being bullied, how to help your child cope with bullies and how to interact with the school about a bullying situation.

School Safety Site Assessments

In the wake of the attack on the World Trade Center (911) many schools across the nation are looking again at security.  Schools see this as a very proactive step in beefing up the Crisis Readiness and Preparedness.  A School Safety Site Assessment is one such way to determine your schools Readiness and see if there is anything you are missing.  School Safety Site Assessments are conducted by two leading directors of Keys, Frank Green, MA, LPC (retired Army "Risk Analysis and Bomb Ordnance Specialist) and Mike Nelson, MS, LPC, NCC.  The assessment includes a survey of the school and a report outlining potential security issues and model solutions to creating a safer school.  School Safety Site Assessments are available to entire school districts.  All assessments are handled on an individual basis by KEYS TO SAFER SCHOOLS.com
