In-Service

Sponsored by: Lake Hamilton High School: Contact Person-Paula McRae
Training Location:
Lake Hamilton High School - Pearcy, Arkansas
Early Warning Signs of the Potentially Dangerous Student

This is an abbreviated version of our "Assessment Training of the Potentially Dangerous Student." It is intended as a follow-on training for the school staff in implementing the procedures covered in the full training. The model is for the school district to develop an assessment team concept, consisting of 3 or 4 people in each school who are trained in the use of the Keys To Safer Schools.com "Assessment Tool" and referral procedures. This provides a core of people who can take the observations of Early Warning Signs provided by teachers and others and process them into an action plan for the student. We are prepared to provide the in-service without the Assessment training, however, it may leave a gap as to what the teachers are expected to do with their new found knowledge. If the school already has a plan, we will incorporate it into the training.

  • NOTE:  For maximum benefit it is recommended that this training be paired with the Assessment Training of the Potentially Dangerous Student before the in-service. If the Assessment Team is training, then the in-service includes training and information on the referral process to these Assessment Team members when teachers/staff identify Early Warning Signs in students in their classrooms.

Bullying - BULLYING STOPS when RESPECT BEGINS (c)

School students have reported an increase in bullying with severe consequences to themselves and their schools. As if this were not enough, bullying has been identified in a national study as a factor in the recent school shootings. At Columbine  a group of school athletes bullied the two boys who later became shooters. Almost any group in anyone's school could be the "bullies" and and it would be accurate at some point in time. Bullying can be physical, emotional or social. Keys' Bullying Program offers four modules to fully address the different aspects of this complex issue.  These are:

  1. The Victim: How to handle being bullied by a peer.

  2. The Bully: How to identify the need for bullying and better ways to meet that need.

  3. The School: How to deal with both sides of bullying in a productive manner.

  4. The Parent: How to recognize signs that your child is being bullied, how to help your child cope with bullies and how to interact with the school about a bullying situation.

Student Assembly
Bullying I - BULLYING STOPS when RESPECT BEGINS (c)

This Student Assembly is part of the overall Bully Stop when Respect Begins campaign.  During the assembly students will act out skits to help them understand what a victim & Bully look like and how to handle differing situations dealing with bullying.  We will look at the difference between teasing and bullying; between tattle-telling and responsible-telling.  Here are some other topics that will be covered:

  1. The Victim: How to handle being bullied by a peer.

  2. The Bully: How to identify the need for bullying and better ways to meet that need.

Keys announces the most anticipated, relevant and requested National Pilot Training Program as outlined in the Columbine Report, namely the

Train-the-Trainers: Certification Training - Assessing the Potentially Dangerous Student (PDS).

Currently Keys has required their Mental Health Violence Prevention Experts to conduct this one-of-a-kind training.  Due to the increasing demand on Keys staff to train individuals in the Assessing of the PDS, Keys is offering this FIRST EVER two day Train-the-trainer event to selected, qualified individuals.

Click here to Request Acceptance into training.

This is the most essential training available to schools and youth workers today. With the ever increasing frequency of school shootings, it is time that we do something about it. Building upon National Level research by the Department of Education, Office of Juvenile Justice, the FBI, the Secret Service and others, Keys' has developed a most unique approach to the detection and prevention of School Violence. It looks at "Why" we miss these students, "What" to do to identify them, and "How" to provide help for them.  There is an emphasis on identification, assessment and training of early and imminent warning signs of the PDS. This training provides schools a component of the Risk Assessment Team Model that meets the guidelines of the Commission Report on Columbine for effectively identifying students who may need help. Unlike training seminars that merely provide theory and information, this training will produce Certification and a Train-the-Trainer Model for instituting/using the Keys To Safe Schools.com Assessment Tool, a unique device that identifies students in need of help. But schools should not stop with training Assessment Teams but should take the next step and provide an in-service for ALL staff in identification of the Potentially Dangerous Students.

Break out Sessions

  1. Anger Management/De-escalation Session
A brief look at how to recognize anger, manage anger and de-escalate volatile situations. The session will discuss non-physical and physical means to stop or break up a fight with minimal risk to all involved.

  2. Bullying Stops when Respect Begins Session

The Bullying session will briefly look at four modules to fully address the different aspects of this complex issue. These are:

    • The School: How to institute a bullying program.

    • The Victim: How to handle being bullied.

    • The Bully: Identifying the unmet needs of the bully.

    • The Parent (who at times is absent and the Dorm Parent taken on that roll): Signs that your child is being bullied or is a bully.

  3. Recognizing the Potentially Dangerous Student

We will briefly discuss a model approach to developing an Risk Assessment Response Team as covered in the Columbine Report.  Although, we will spend the great part of the session looking briefly at Early and Imminent Warning Signs which was brought out in the FBI, Department of Ed and other national studies. This session will look at these three sub-topics:

    • Why identify the Potentially Dangerous Student?

    • What are the Early Warning Signs?
This is a listing of signs and traits demonstrated by perpetrators of past violent acts. It also includes cautions about misunderstanding and misapplication of the signs and possible harm that can come from doing so.

    • Now what?
This topic looks at preventative interventions that can be taken with students who display Early Warning Signs. It emphasizes the need to take action while being careful not to label students.
