Bus Driver Training - Student Management in a Hostile Environment

Every day millions of children ride a bus to and from school. There is only one adult on board and his or her primary mission is the safe mechanical operation of the vehicle on congested or lonely roads. Just as important is his or her secondary mission of managing the students, their parents and unexpected incidents along the route. This training is designed to equip the driver with skills to handle this secondary mission. To learn more about training -> click here

Early Warning Signs of the Potentially Dangerous Student

This is an abbreviated version of our "Assessment Training of the Potentially Dangerous Student." It is intended as a follow-on training for the school staff in implementing the procedures covered in the full training. The model is for the school district to develop an assessment team concept, consisting of 3 or 4 people in each school who are trained in the use of the Keys To Safer Schools.com "Assessment Tool" and referral procedures. This provides a core of people who can take the observations of Early Warning Signs provided by teachers and others and process them into an action plan for the student. We are prepared to provide the in-service without the Assessment training, however, it may leave a gap as to what the teachers are expected to do with their new found knowledge. If the school already has a plan, we will incorporate it into the training.

  • NOTE:  For maximum benefit it is recommended that this training be paired with the Assessment Training of the Potentially Dangerous Student before the in-service. If the Assessment Team is training, then the in-service includes training and information on the referral process to these Assessment Team members when teachers/staff identify Early Warning Signs in students in their classrooms.

3 hour In-service

ASSESSMENT OF THE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS STUDENT

Targeted Participants:
Counselors, Crisis Team members, Principals & Asst., Behavioral Teachers, RA Directors, Probation Officers, Nurses, Disciplinarians, SRO's, Law Enforcement, Risk Assessment Team members

This is the most essential training available to schools, universities and youth workers today. With the ever increasing frequency of school & university shootings, it is time that we do something about it. Building upon National Level research by the Department of Education, Office of Juvenile Justice, the FBI, the Secret Service and others, Keys' has developed a most unique approach to the detection and prevention of School Violence. It looks at "Why" we miss these students, "What" to do to identify them, and "How" to provide help for them.  There is an emphasis on identification and assessment of early and imminent warning signs in troubled youth. This training provides schools a component of the Risk Assessment Team Model that meets the guidelines of the Commission Report on Columbine for effectively identifying students who may need help. Unlike training seminars that merely provide theory and information, this training will produce Certification for using the Keys To Safe Schools.com Assessment Tool, a unique device that identifies students in need of help. But schools should not stop with training Assessment Teams but should take the next step and provide an in-service for ALL staff in identification of Early Warning Signs.

School students have reported an increase in bullying with severe consequences to themselves and their schools. As if this were not enough, bullying has been identified in a international study as a factor in the recent school shootings. At Columbine a group of school athletes bullied the two boys who later became shooters. Almost any group in anyone's school could be the "bullies" and and it would be accurate at some point in time. Bullying can be physical, emotional or social. Keys' Bullying Program offers four modules to fully address the different aspects of this complex issue.  These are:

  1. The Victim: How to handle being bullied by a peer.

  2. The Bully: How to identify the need for bullying and better ways to meet that need.

  3. The School: How to deal with both sides of bullying in a productive manner.

  4. The Parent: How to recognize signs that your child is being bullied, how to help your child cope with bullies and how to interact with the school about a bullying situation.

Anger Management/De-escalation Train-the-Trainer Training

Two day Train-the-Trainer

LOCATION:  Marshalltown Community College:

3700 S Center Street. Marshalltown, IA                     MAP

This training is based on National Research and a must training for those that work with children, adolescents and young adults. It is a "practical" training that teaches how to recognize anger, manage anger and de-escalate volatile situations in the classroom. It trains the Trainers three levels of controlling anger and that is to first control themselves, then control the situation, and finally to control the student. This training introduces Huan Ju, The Art of Redirection. It provides physical and non-physical means to stop or break up a fight with minimal risk to all involved. The techniques taught protect the dignity of the combatants, which minimizes the probability of retaliation or recurrence.  The unique character of this system is that it is NOT pain inducing, it maintains dignity, it is geared toward students in school rather than adults in residential settings and trainers are re-certified every 2 years - unlike other trainings methods.
