Assessing the Potentially Dangerous Student TtT

The things some teachers do...

Cameron County, Texas

Brett Marshall was arrested at Los Fresnos high school where he teaches music. He has been charged with forcing a 13 year old to have sex with him, according to news source. This activity extended over a 6-month period before the girls parent noticed a mark on her neck and started questioning her. The school has suspended Marshall with pay; his church where he is the Music Director, has suspended him without pay.

This arrest brought attention to the county where a total of four teachers have been arrested just this school year on sexual abuse charges. Two were in the Brownsville district and the fourth was from Harlingen.

 Warren County, Tennessee

Pamela Rogers, 28, the former PE Teacher who was convicted of having sex with a 13 year old student, was released and is back in jail for probation violations. She is accused of sending photos of herself naked by mobile phone to the boy. She is alleged to have sent additional photos to the same boy after her initial arraignment. While she is not allowed to profit from her illegal activities, a Colorado artist has created a “Pamela Action Figure” that resembles the photos. Bidding on ebay has exceeded $150 each.

Brooklyn, NY

Carrie Roberson, 57, allegedly taped one pupil's arms, head and mouth and a second pupil's mouth. She then taped both boys to their chairs. Supposedly, the boys, ages 9 and 10, were acting out in class and were unruly and difficult to control.

Earlier this year, a NY school bus driver was charged with using electrical tape and seat belts to tie down a 7-year old girl that he said was unruly.

Anniston, Alabama

Sharrissa Cook, 26,  a first year teacher at an Anniston Middle School, was arrested in a drug raid at an apartment not connected to the school. Among others in the apartment, she was charged with possession of cocaine, crack cocaine, prescription pills and a stolen firearm, according to news source. She has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Taylor County, West Virginia

Lu Ann Woodyard, 51, has taught in the county for more than 20 years. She, along with three others, were arrested in a drug raid and charged with conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine, according to news source. Drug dogs were sent to the school to sweep Woodyard’s classroom as a precautionary measure. Further actions are pending.

Luxemburg-Casco, Wisconsin

David Kopetsky, 36, a Luxemburg-Casco High School teacher has been arrested for allegedly having sexual contact with a student. He is accused of having “consensual” sex with a 17-year old which is a charge of sexual assault of a student by a staff member. He was released on $5,000 bond and has been suspended pending the outcome. The school became aware of the possibility of the relationship and notified the sheriff’s office.

Henry County, Georgia

Richard David Powell, III, 53, a Special Education Teacher has been charged with, according to news source, battery after attacking a 17-year old autistic student. Two classroom aides witnessed the incident and said they were shocked by Powell’s actions since he is also a minister. Powell reported that he tried to restrain the student after he backhanded Powell. The witnesses report that the teacher tackled the non-verbal student and wrestled with him until the teacher ended up on top of the student with his forearm across the student’s neck. The student is being treated for a neck sprain and PTSD.

Broward County, Florida

Ardonnis Lumpkin, Assistant Principal at a charter school, according to news source, was arrested in the course of a school shooting investigation when police ran a background check and discovered an outstanding warrant for DUI. Further checks disclosed prior arrests for theft and battery.

----------------------------------

Every school shooting, when thoroughly investigated,  has found out that other students knew it was going to happen. It seems reasonable to believe that in almost every incident of teachers engaged in illegal activity, some other school official must have known or suspected that it was happening. Since most of these allegations involved students, it is also very probable that other students knew something was going on. A major component of Keys' Assessing the Potentially Dangerous Student is raising the level of awareness in all school staff and providing a means for reporting any potentially harmful behavior. If member of a school staff are adept at covering their illegal activity, the students involved are likely to be showing signs that would be observed if the school staff was properly trained in observation and assessment techniques.
